Harloff Funeral Home Obituaries
David Bonacchi, former East Rochester judge, mayor and police officer, dies - Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Nov 29, 2018
In November, Mr. Bonacchi, 62, ran as an unopposed incumbent for town justice. He formerly served as mayor of the town/village of East Rochester and as a sergeant for the police department. Mr. Bonacchi, a 1973 graduate of East Rochester and the 1995 New York state amateur golf champion, had been married for 36 years to the former Rosanne DiMarco, with whom he had three sons. Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 5 to 8. Thursday at Harloff Funeral Home on South Washington Street in East Rochester. Those attending are asked to park at East Rochester High School and a shuttle will be provided to the funeral home, according to Harloff Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Jerome Church in East Rochester, according to the Rev. William Leone. "He was a great part of the community ... this was his home village. It's a big loss to this community," Leone said. In 2012, the East Rochester Town/Village Board voted 4-1 to make Mr. Bonacchi town justice. The unusual contingency became necessary after Mr. Bonacchi, a Republican, and Democrat Dennis Greco each earned exactly 1,274 votes in the popular election to replace newly elected state Supreme Court Justice Scott Odorisi. Mr. Bonacchi then ran unopposed for a four-year term in 2013. He had served as mayor from 2001 to 2008 and with the village police department from 1979 to 2000. ...
Fledgling program offers handmade caskets for the indigent - Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Nov 29, 2018
Urns gathered from area flea markets fill the shelves. Handmade wooden caskets rest on sawhorses and dollies. The smallest is for a child. This is Memorials Co-op. "Our mission is nothing less than to save the world," said program director Randy McDonald, "or our place in the world." The fledgling effort of St. Joseph's House of Hospitality and Dorothy Day House launched last year with a $5,000 seed grant to provide handcrafted caskets, urns or memorials to families in need. A unique, well-intentioned effort, Memorials Co-op provides something of a window, and a status check, into a problem the county has struggled with for years. One in three Rochesterians, and nearly one in seven Monroe County residents live in poverty, making the loss of a loved one a potential financial crisis. Monroe County helps fund more than 800 indigent burials a year, assisting in 821 burials two years ago, 862 last year, and 802 so far this year, as of Wednesday. But the county caps aid at less than half the cost of a traditional burial — forcing many to opt for cremation, officials said. In the not-so-distant past, indigent burial meant cardboard coffins and unmarked graves. The county outlay nonetheless tops $1 million annually. A relatively s...
Obituaries reflect devastating opioid crisis, as families tell truth about lost loved ones - Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Nov 29, 2018
The only question was what words they would use. “We wanted it truthful,” Joe Mullin said. “Mullin, Patrick Joseph, Irondequoit: Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at the age of 32 after a long battle with addiction.” One sign that the opioid problem shows little sign of abating is a steady appearance in newspaper death notices that a young person died from addiction. The phenomenon can be seen in paid announcements in large and small newspapers all over the country. In 2015, a blog on th...
